Fondy began his professional baseball career in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut on April 19, 1948, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played two seasons with the Pirates before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1951. Fondy had his best season with the Cubs in 1953 when he hit .309 with 18 home runs and 71 RBIs. He was then traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he played his final two seasons before retiring after the 1958 season.

Fondy had a career batting average of .286 with 57 home runs and 375 RBIs. He was a two-time All-Star in 1952 and 1953 and was one of the best defensive first basemen of his era. Fondy was also known for his durability, playing in at least 140 games for four of his seven MLB seasons. After retiring, Fondy returned to his home state of Texas and worked in the oil industry.
