Dick Drago was a right-handed pitcher who played in the Major League Baseball for 13 seasons. He was born on June 25, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio. Drago was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in 1965, and he made his debut on September 27, 1969, with the Oakland Athletics. Throughout his career, he played for several teams, including the Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, and California Angels.
Drago had an impressive career as a pitcher, with some notable achievements. In 1977, while playing for the Boston Red Sox, he won the American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player award. During the 1978 season, he also set the Red Sox record of most consecutive victories by a relief pitcher, with 13 straight wins. Drago appeared in 464 games over his career, with a record of 108-117, an ERA of 3.74, and 82 saves.
After retiring from baseball, Drago worked as a pitching coach for various minor league teams, including the Modesto A's, New Haven Ravens, and Peoria Chiefs. He was also a spring training instructor for the Kansas City Royals for several years. In addition, Drago was inducted into the Toledo Area Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019, which honored his outstanding career and contribution to the sport.
