Dick Wakefield Autographs
Dick Wakefield was a professional baseball player who played for a variety of teams throughout his career. Wakefield was born May 6, 1921, and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He went on to attend the University of Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines and became the first Michigan player to win the Big Ten batting championship in 1941.
After college, Wakefield played for the Detroit Tigers, where he quickly became a fan favorite. In his rookie season in 1943, he batted .316 with 12 home runs and 104 RBIs, earning him the American League Rookie of the Year award. Wakefield was known for his powerful arm in the outfield and his ability to hit for both power and average. However, his career was interrupted by World War II, and he spent two years serving in the Navy before returning to the Tigers in 1946.
Wakefield played for the Tigers until 1949 before being traded to the New York Yankees for the 1950 season. He played with the Yankees for just one season before being sent to the Washington Senators in 1951, where he played his final season in the major leagues. Wakefield finished his career with a lifetime batting average of .289, 69 home runs, and 425 RBIs. Despite his short career, Wakefield's impact on the game of baseball was significant, and he remains a beloved figure in the sport's history.
