Dion James is a former professional baseball player who was born on November 9, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was raised in the city by his parents, who were both active in athletics. From a young age, James showed a natural talent for baseball and played on his high school team. After graduation, he was awarded a scholarship to play at the University of Georgia.
In 1980, James was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He played for the organization's minor league teams before making his major league debut in 1983. Over the course of his career, James played for several teams, including the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and Seattle Mariners. He was known for his exceptional speed and defensive skills and was a favorite among fans for his hustle and dedication to the game.
Throughout his career, James had several notable accomplishments, including being named to the National League All-Star team in 1987, winning a Gold Glove Award in 1991, and setting a Mariners franchise record for consecutive games with a hit in 1992. He retired from baseball in 1996 and currently works as a professional sports agent. Despite his success on the field, James has been open about the challenges he faced as a Black player in a predominantly white sport and has advocated for greater diversity and inclusion in baseball.
