Dixie Walker Autographs
Dixie Walker was a professional baseball player who played in the major leagues with different teams between 1931 and 1949. Walker was born as Fred Walker in Georgia in 1910 but became known as "Dixie" because of his southern origins. Walker's baseball career started in the minor leagues, where he played for several teams before joining the New York Yankees in 1931. However, he played only one game with the Yankees before being traded to the Chicago White Sox.
Walker's best years as a baseball player were with the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he played from 1939 to 1947. He became a favorite among Dodgers fans for his excellent batting, his skillful fielding, and his tireless running. In 1944, Walker had his best season, finishing with a batting average of .357 and leading the National League in hits, doubles, and triples. During his career, Walker played in four World Series and was selected to five All-Star Games. After leaving the Dodgers, Walker played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Browns before retiring in 1949.
Despite his success on the field, Walker's legacy was stained by his association with racism. He was known to have opposed the Dodgers' signing of Jackie Robinson, the first African American player in the major leagues. In 1947, Walker, along with several teammates, signed a petition against Robinson's inclusion on the team, claiming that it would be divisive, but later disavowed himself from the sentiment. However, Walker later expressed regret for his actions, stating that he had learned from his mistakes and that he believed in equality for all.
