Ellis had a solid career as a pitcher, earning two All-Star appearances and helping the Pirates win the 1971 World Series. He was known for his aggressive pitching style, often throwing inside to get batters off balance. His best individual year came in 1971 when he went 19-9 with a 3.06 ERA. He also led the league in strikeouts that year and finished fourth in Cy Young Award voting.

Off the field, Ellis was a passionate advocate for civil rights and was heavily involved in the fight against racism. He was one of the first black players to speak out against his team's use of the Confederate flag and refused to play on the day of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. He continued to use his platform to promote social justice throughout his life, even after retiring from baseball. Ellis passed away in 2008 at the age of 63.
