Demeter began his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956, where he played alongside legendary players such as Jackie Robinson and Duke Snider. He quickly showed promise, hitting 15 home runs in his rookie season. In 1959, he hit a career-high 31 home runs and drove in 107 runs while leading the league in RBI.

Demeter also played for the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox during his career. He was known for his powerful swing and solid defensive skills, playing primarily in the outfield.
