Don Dillard Autographs
Don Dillard was a professional baseball player who was born on February 10, 1931 in Ashland, Mississippi. He played as a catcher and a utility player for several teams throughout his baseball career. Dillard started his career playing in the Negro leagues before getting drafted to play for the Cleveland Indians in 1955. He played for the Indians until 1959, and then moved on to play for teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and Washington Senators. Dillard’s last season in the major leagues was in 1963.
Throughout his career, Dillard was a reliable catcher with a great throwing arm, which made it difficult for opposing players to steal bases. He played in a total of 421 games and had a batting average of .222. Dillard's greatest career highlight came on September 14, 1957, when he hit two home runs against the Boston Red Sox in the same inning. This feat has only been achieved by a few players in the history of the MLB.
After retiring from baseball, Dillard returned to Ashland, Mississippi, where he passed away on October 3, 2005, at the age of 74. He was inducted into the Northeast Mississippi Community College Hall of Fame in recognition of his successful career. Despite not having a flashy career, Dillard was a respected player and a reliable asset to his teams. He was a testament to the hard work it takes to earn a spot on a major league team and the determination required to perform at that level.
