Throughout his career, Don Elston was known for his effective fastball and sharp curveball. He was a fearless competitor and a key member of the Cubs' bullpen during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Elston pitched for three different teams during his career, but his best years were with the Cubs. He retired in 1964 with a career ERA of 3.69, 47 saves, and an impressive 57-34 record.

Although he was never an All-Star, Don Elston was a respected member of the game and a dependable reliever for his teams. He passed away on January 4, 1995, but his legacy lives on. He was inducted into the Campbell High School Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Southeast Missouri Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019. Elston also helped pave the way for future Cubs relievers such as Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith, who would go on to become dominant closers in the 1980s and 1990s.
