Don Schwall Autographs
Don Schwall was born on December 22, 1936, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he played college baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners. Schwall made his Major League debut on April 15, 1961, with the Boston Red Sox. He played for the Red Sox for four seasons, from 1961-1964, primarily as a relief pitcher, before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 1965.
Schwall's best season in the Majors came in 1961 when he was named American League Rookie of the Year. In his rookie season, he had a record of 15-7 with an ERA of 3.22. Schwall pitched in 45 games, starting 19 of them, and completed six of those starts. His strong rookie season helped the Red Sox win the American League pennant that year. Despite his success in 1961, Schwall was never quite able to replicate that level of performance in his subsequent seasons.
After playing for the Pirates in 1965, Schwall was shipped to the Atlanta Braves for the 1966 season. He then finished his Major League career in 1967 with the Chicago White Sox. Over his seven-season career, Schwall had a record of 49-48 with an ERA of 3.56. He struck out 437 batters in 848 innings pitched. While he was never able to repeat the success of his 1961 season, Schwall remained a respected and popular member of the teams he played for.
