Doug Harvey was a renowned baseball umpire with a nearly 32-year career in the Major Leagues. Born in California’s Orange County in 1930, Harvey grew up playing baseball before turning to amateur umpiring in the Long Beach area. As an umpire, Harvey earned a reputation for being one of the most reliable and consistent on-field officials, known for making accurate and timely decisions even in the biggest games. In 2010, Harvey was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the ninth umpire to receive the honor.
Harvey began his professional umpiring career in 1958 and quickly distinguished himself as one of the best at his job. Over the next three decades, he officiated countless regular-season and playoff games, including three World Series and six All-Star games. His most prominent moment came in Game 3 of the 1975 World Series when he made a crucial call at home plate, calling out a Cincinnati Reds runner and preserving the Red Sox’ lead. He also played a significant role in working with league administrators to develop new umpiring standards and guidelines, helping to establish a more professional and streamlined sports officiating industry.
Harvey retired from umpiring in 1992 but continued to be involved in baseball as an instructor, mentor, and author. He wrote the book, “They Called Me God: The Best Umpire Who Ever Lived,” which offers a candid, behind-the-scenes view of his life and career. Even after his passing in 2018, Doug Harvey remains an icon in the world of sports officiating and continues to be celebrated for his contributions to the game of baseball.
