Rader began his professional baseball career in 1967 with the Houston Astros. He was known for his outstanding defense and he won five consecutive Gold Glove awards from 1970 to 1974. He was a reliable and consistent performer for the Astros and earned two All-Star selections in his ten-year tenure with the team. In 1975 he was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he played for two more seasons before retiring as a player.

After retiring as a player, Doug Rader moved onto managing in the Major Leagues. He was initially appointed as a first-base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers before becoming the manager of the California Angels. He managed the Angels for four seasons and took them to the American League Championship Series in 1982, where they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers. He later managed the Texas Rangers for six seasons, taking them to their first-ever American League pennant in 2010. Doug Rader’s contributions to baseball have been immense, and he will always be remembered as one of the finest fielding third basemen in the history of the sport.
