Drew Smyly is a left-handed pitcher born on June 13, 1989, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas and then went on to be drafted in the second round by the Detroit Tigers in 2010. Smyly quickly progressed through the Tigers' minor league system and made his MLB debut in 2012.
Over the course of his career, Smyly has played for the Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves. Smyly has mainly been used as a starting pitcher, but has also served as a reliable relief option. Smyly is known for his ability to deceive batters with his off-speed pitches and has struck out a total of 792 batters throughout his career.
Smyly's career highlight was being part of the 2013 Detroit Tigers' playoff run. In the ALCS, Smyly pitched seven shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox, securing a victory for the Tigers. Smyly has also played for team USA in various international tournaments, including winning a gold medal at the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Despite some injury setbacks, Smyly is still an active player, recently signing with the Atlanta Braves for the 2021 season.
