Gooden made his Major League debut with the Mets in 1984, where he quickly became known for his overpowering pitches and impressive record. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year that season, posting a 17-9 record with an ERA of 2.60. The following year, he became the youngest player ever to win the Cy Young Award, pitching a league-leading 276 strikeouts and a 1.53 ERA. He continued to dominate for the next few seasons, becoming one of the most feared pitchers in the league.

Unfortunately, Gooden's career was derailed by substance abuse issues. He was suspended for the entire 1995 season for violating the MLB's drug abuse policy and struggled to regain his form in the years that followed. Though he continued to play for several more years, his performance was never quite the same. Despite this, Gooden remains one of the most talented pitchers in baseball history, with multiple All-Star selections, Cy Young Awards, and World Series championships under his belt.
