Averill entered the majors with the Cleveland Indians in 1929 and was already an accomplished player with a .354 batting average, which led the Pacific Coast League, and set a new professional record for home runs in a single season (55). He was an immediate success, finishing third in the AL MVP voting in his rookie season. He won five straight All-Star Game selections and was a nine-time All-Star in his career. In 1936, he became the first-ever AL player to hit four home runs in a single game, a rare feat in the baseball world.

Earl Averill finished his baseball career with a lifetime batting average of .318 and 238 home runs. After retiring as a player in 1941, he continued to contribute to the baseball community, serving as a coach and scout. He was voted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame in 1979, a fitting recognition of his contribution to baseball, especially in the Pacific Coast League.
