He was born on May 19, 1955, in Johnson City, Tennessee, and attended East Tennessee State University where he played college baseball. Whitson's career was not without controversy, however. He famously had a tumultuous time with the Yankees, where he was signed to a five-year, $4.4 million contract in 1985. He struggled in his first season with the team and was demoted to the minor leagues. He also had public clashes with team owner George Steinbrenner, which led to him being traded to the San Diego Padres in 1986.
