Eddie Waitkus was an American baseball player who was born on September 4, 1919, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He played in the major leagues for 11 seasons, from 1941 until 1955. Waitkus is best known for being the victim of a shooting incident in 1949. He was playing first base for the Phillies when a 19-year-old fan named Ruth Ann Steinhagen became obsessed with him. She lured him to her hotel room and then shot him in the chest. Waitkus survived the attack and eventually returned to baseball. He played for several more years before retiring in 1955. The incident was the inspiration for the novel and movie "The Natural," although the character in the story was named Roy Hobbs.

Despite the shooting incident, Waitkus had a successful baseball career. He was a two-time All-Star and won the National League batting title in 1946 with a .304 average. He finished his career with a .287 batting average and 67 home runs. Waitkus was also known for his defensive prowess, winning two Gold Glove Awards in 1953 and 1954.
