Eli Grba Autographs
Eli Grba was an American baseball player who was born in 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a right-handed pitcher who spent five years playing in the Major Leagues, primarily for the New York Yankees. Grba began his professional career in 1954 when the Yankees signed him as an amateur free agent. He spent four years in the minor leagues before making his Major League debut in 1959.
Grba's best season came in 1961 when he was a part of the Yankees team that won the World Series. He started Game 1 of the Series and pitched a complete game as the Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds. Grba finished the season with an 8-9 record and a 4.28 ERA. He played two more seasons with the Yankees before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Angels in 1963. In his five-year career, Grba had a record of 28-33 with a 4.48 ERA.
After retiring from baseball, Grba struggled with alcoholism and depression. He became sober in the 1980s and began speaking candidly about his struggles. Grba wrote a book, "Baseball's Fallen Angel: A Major Leaguer's Life Story of Highs and Lows on the Field and Off," which chronicled his career and his battle with addiction. Grba passed away in 2019 at the age of 84. Despite a relatively short career, Grba's contribution to the Yankees World Series win and his candor about his struggles have cemented his place in baseball history.
