Burton began his professional baseball career in 1956 when he signed with the Chicago Cubs. He spent two years in their minor league system before getting called up to the Majors in 1958. His speed was immediately noticeable, as he stole 26 bases in 71 games that season. Burton was then traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played for three seasons. He was a key part of the team that won the 1959 World Series, batting .400 in the series and delivering several crucial plays in the outfield. He later played for the Milwaukee Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals before retiring in 1964.

Burton had a career batting average of .257 and stole 128 bases in his seven-year career. However, his true excellence was on the defensive side of the ball. He was known for his ability to cover ground in the outfield and make difficult catches look routine. In addition, he had a cannon of an arm and was one of the best defensive outfielders of his era. Although his baseball career was relatively short, Burton’s impact on the game was significant, and he is remembered as one of the most exciting players of his time.
