Elmer Riddle Autograph

Elmer Riddle was an American baseball player who was born on July 31, 1914, in Columbus, Georgia. He spent most of his baseball career as a pitcher, known for his ability to throw a variety of pitches, including an effective sinkerball. Riddle started playing baseball professionally in 1938 when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Riddle's career really took off when he joined the Cincinnati Reds in 1943. That year, he had an impressive 21-11 record and a stellar 2.75 ERA. He followed that up with an even better season in 1944, earning a 21-12 record and a 2.34 ERA. Riddle's pitching was instrumental in helping the Reds win the National League pennant that year. He went on to pitch in the World Series against the Detroit Tigers, but unfortunately, the Reds lost the series. Throughout his career, Riddle was known for his excellent control on the mound, and he retired with a career ERA of 3.58.

Riddle continued to play for several more seasons, but his career was hampered by injuries. He retired in 1950 with a career record of 65-45, 846 strikeouts and a 3.58 ERA. After retiring from baseball, Riddle worked as a farmer in his native Georgia. He passed away in 1984 at the age of 70. Riddle is remembered for his stellar pitching performances, especially during his time with the Reds, and for his important role in helping the team reach the World Series in 1944.
