Hillman made his MLB debut for the Mets in 1992 and played for the team until 1994. He was a left-handed pitcher known for his tall stature, clocking in at 6'10". In 1993, Hillman had his best season in the majors, with a 9-4 record and a 3.76 earned run average (ERA). Despite his success, injuries plagued Hillman's career, and he spent time on the disabled list multiple times resulting in his playing toward the end of his career for other leagues and international teams.

After leaving MLB, Hillman played in Japan for the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks from 1996 to 2001. During his time there, he helped lead the team to two Japan Series championships. Hillman's success in Japan earned him the nickname "Gaijin Kabuto" which means "Foreign Helmet" in Japanese. Hillman retired from professional baseball in 2004 with an overall record 30-44 and a 4.82 ERA. He is remembered as an accomplished and admired athlete by fans and fellow players alike.
