After high school, Montross attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he continued his impressive basketball career. He played for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 1990 to 1994, and during his senior year, he helped the team win the National Championship. In his four years at North Carolina, Montross played in 136 games, scored 1,392 points, and grabbed 1,060 rebounds. In 1994, he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year and was drafted by the Boston Celtics as the ninth overall pick.

In the NBA, Montross played for various teams, including the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Mavericks, the New Jersey Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Detroit Pistons. He was known for his strong defensive skills and was often used as a backup center. Montross played a total of 431 games in the NBA, averaging 4.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
