Evan Gattis was born on August 18, 1986 in Forney, Texas. He attended the University of Texas of the Permian Basin but did not play college baseball there. Instead, Gattis bounced around multiple odd jobs and even worked as a janitor before realizing his passion for baseball. Gattis was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves. He quickly climbed through the minor league ranks and made his MLB debut in 2013. Gattis became a fan favorite in Atlanta, earning the nickname "El Oso Blanco" (The White Bear) due to his burly appearance and powerful swing. During his first season, Gattis hit 21 home runs and had a batting average of .243.
