Cordero made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1999, but it wasn't until he joined the Texas Rangers in 2000 that he found success as a closer. In 2004, he recorded 49 saves and was named to the American League All-Star team. Cordero was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2006, where he recorded 44 saves and set a franchise record for the most saves in a single season. In 2008, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds and had another impressive season, recording 39 saves and being selected to his second All-Star game.

Cordero retired from professional baseball in 2013 with a career total of 329 saves, making him one of the most successful closers in MLB history. He was a three-time All-Star and won the Rolaids Relief Man Award in the American League in 2005. Cordero was also known for his philanthropy work in his native Dominican Republic, where he helped build a hospital and supported various charities.
