Born on September 13, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland, Cashen played baseball in high school and later attended Loyola College. However, he was forced to give up his playing career due to an arm injury. He then went on to study law and worked as a lawyer before joining the Baltimore Orioles in 1965 as the Vice President and General Counsel. He also served as the team's president for two years before leaving in 1975 to work for the Major League Baseball Players Association as their legal advisor.

In 1980, Cashen was hired by the New York Mets as their General Manager, and he immediately set out to transform the struggling franchise into a championship team. He revamped the team's scouting and player development system, and made several key signings and trades, including the acquisition of Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and Ray Knight. His vision paid off in 1986, when the Mets won their second World Series title, after defeating the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling seven-game series.
