Fred Gladding was born in Flat Rock, Michigan on June 28, 1936. He attended Eastern Michigan University where he played both football and baseball. However, it was in the latter that he excelled, leading his team to a conference championship and being named an All-American. Despite throwing a fastball that could reach 99 miles per hour, Gladding struggled in his first few seasons in the majors. However, he broke through in 1965 with the Houston Astros and became one of the most dominant relief pitchers of his time. Over the next six seasons, he racked up 110 saves and a 2.45 earned run average, earning two All-Star selections and helping the Astros reach the postseason for the first time in franchise history in 1980.
