Despite throwing a fastball that could reach 99 miles per hour, Gladding struggled in his first few seasons in the majors. However, he broke through in 1965 with the Houston Astros and became one of the most dominant relief pitchers of his time. Over the next six seasons, he racked up 110 saves and a 2.45 earned run average, earning two All-Star selections and helping the Astros reach the postseason for the first time in franchise history in 1980. He retired after the 1973 season with a career record of 48-27 and 125 saves, cementing his legacy as one of the best relief pitchers of his era.

After his playing career, Gladding remained involved in baseball as a coach and mentor to young players. He was inducted into the Eastern Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. In 2006, however, Gladding passed away at the age of 69 due to heart failure. Despite his untimely death, his contributions to the game of baseball and his impact on the players he coached will be remembered for years to come. Read even more about Fred Gladding at Wikipedia
