Gonzalez's coaching career began in 1990 as a hitting instructor for the Yankees’ minor league team. He quickly worked his way up the ranks, becoming a manager for the first time in 1992 with the Geneva Cubs. He went on to manage in several different minor league systems before getting his first major league managing job with the Florida Marlins in 2007. Gonzalez led the Marlins to a winning record in his first year, earning him the National League Manager of the Year award. He would later manage the Atlanta Braves from 2011-2016 and was named the All-Star Game manager in 2013.

Throughout his career as a player, coach, and manager, Gonzalez has been known for his ability to connect with players and his dedication to the game. He is also known for advocating for the development of young talent and has played a role in the careers of several successful major league players. Gonzalez has left an unmistakable imprint on the game and his contributions have earned him a place among the most respected coaches and managers in baseball.
