In 1979, Gaetti was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the MLB draft. He made his major league debut in 1981 as the team's starting third baseman. He quickly became known for his strong defense, earning four Gold Glove awards throughout his career. Gaetti also had a solid bat, hitting over 20 home runs in a season for the first time in 1984. He helped lead the Twins to their first World Series title in 1987, hitting .267 with 2 home runs in the series. Gaetti played for 20 seasons with six different teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros, before retiring in 2000.

Throughout his career, Gaetti was known for his toughness and competitiveness on the field. He was a five-time All-Star and won two Silver Slugger awards for his offensive prowess. Gaetti finished his career with a .255 batting average, 360 home runs, and 1,341 RBI. After retiring, he went on to serve as a manager and coach for several minor league teams, as well as serving as the hitting coach for the Houston Astros in 2004.
