Born on November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida, Sheffield grew up in a family of baseball players. His uncle, Dwight Gooden, and his godfather, Andre Thornton, both played in the MLB. Sheffield started his professional baseball career in 1986 when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the MLB draft. He made his major league debut for the Brewers in 1988 playing as an infielder. Sheffield quickly made a name for himself with his power hitting and exceptional fielding skills. Sheffield played for eight different MLB teams during his career, including the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves. He finished his career with 509 home runs, 1,676 runs batted in (RBIs), and a batting average of .292.

Sheffield was known for his intense focus and hard training regimen. The 10-time All-Star was recognized as a leader in his teams, earning respect from his teammates as well as opponents. He was also known for his fiery temper and had a reputation for being one of the most intimidating hitters in the MLB.
