Elston began his baseball broadcasting career with the Houston Buffaloes in 1949, where he called games until the team moved to Oklahoma City. He then joined KPRC, Houston's NBC-affiliated radio station in 1954, and became the voice of the Colt .45s (renamed the Houston Astros in 1965) when the team joined the National League in 1962. He remained with the Astros for 25 years, calling some of the most memorable moments in the franchise's history, including the team's first playoff appearance in 1980.

Elston's contribution to baseball broadcasting earned him a place in the broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He also received numerous honors throughout his career, including the Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented annually to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball."
