Freese began his professional baseball career in 1951 when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent several seasons in the minor leagues before making his Major League debut in 1955 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for the Phillies for three seasons before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1958. During his time with the Reds, Freese hit a career-high of 26 home runs during the 1959 season. He also won a Gold Glove Award that same year for his defensive skills at third base.

In 1964, Freese was part of the St. Louis Cardinals team that won the National League pennant and went on to win the World Series that year. He contributed to the Cardinals' success with his hitting and defense, and also played a crucial role in the memorable Game Seven of the World Series when he hit a home run that helped the Cardinals win the championship. Freese continued to play in the Major Leagues until 1966, finishing his career with a batting average of .254, 115 home runs, and 404 RBIs.
