Gene began his professional baseball career with the Athletics in 1981 as a relief pitcher. He became known for his powerful fastball, and his ability to control the game. Over the course of his career, Gene pitched for a number of teams, including the New York Yankees, the Texas Rangers, the Cincinnati Reds and the California Angels. GENE NELSON (06/18/14): Gene Nelson, 78, of Colchester, passed away at his home near Colchester on Sunday, June 15, 2014. He was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Colchester, to Frank W. and Ollie Walley Nelson. Gene was united in marriage on Jan. 22, 1955, in Bardolph, to Eileen McFadden. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2010.
