George Altman Autographs
George Altman was a professional baseball player who played for the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1950s and 60s. Altman was born on March 20, 1933, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and started his baseball career in 1955 with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League. Altman quickly made his way to the major leagues and joined the Chicago Cubs in 1959, where he played for six seasons.
Altman became an instant star with the Cubs, setting a career-high batting average of .318 in his rookie season. He was known for his incredible hitting and was considered one of the best players on the Cubs roster during his tenure there. In 1961, Altman became the first Cubs player to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a single season. Altman's impressive playing earned him two All-Star Game appearances, in 1961 and 1962.
In 1965, Altman was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played for four seasons. He continued to play well with the Cardinals, hitting a career-high 27 home runs in 1966. Altman's career came to an end in 1967 when he was traded to the New York Mets but chose to retire instead of joining the team. Altman finished his career with a .269 career batting average, 170 home runs, and 558 runs batted in. Altman was a great player who left a lasting legacy in the MLB and remains a hero to Cubs and Cardinals fans.
