George Kontos Autographs
George Kontos is an American professional baseball player, born on June 12th, 1985, in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Kontos attended Northwestern University, where he played college baseball. He committed to play baseball at Northwestern before being drafted by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB draft. Kontos played in the minor leagues for seven seasons before being called up to the major league level in 2011.
Kontos’ major league debut was on September 10th, 2011, where he pitched a scoreless inning for the Yankees. He was then traded to the San Francisco Giants in the middle of the 2012 season. While with the Giants, Kontos was a valuable relief pitcher and played an essential role in the team's 2012 and 2014 championship runs. Over the course of his major league career, he has accumulated a 3.14 earned run average (ERA) and recorded 326 strikeouts in 348 innings pitched.
In addition to his major league career, Kontos has also played internationally for Team Italy in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. However, after the 2018 season, Kontos became a free agent and was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in January of 2019. In July of 2019, the Pirates granted Kontos his unconditional release, and he remains a free agent. Despite his current situation, Kontos’ impact on the Giants' success cements him as a notable player in baseball history.
