Selkirk retired from baseball in 1942 due to World War II and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received many accolades for his service during the war and continued to play baseball after its conclusion. In 1983, he was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame for his outstanding career, with his number 3 jersey retired by the Yankees.
