George Sisler's baseball career began at the University of Michigan, where he played in 1913 and 1914. He caught the eye of the St. Louis Browns and made his debut in the Major League in 1915. As an infielder, Sisler gained recognition for his exceptional fielding skills and led the American League in assistances for six consecutive years from 1916 to 1921. He was also a terror on the base-paths, setting a stolen base record of 51 steals, which was only broken 44 years later. Sisler's impressive batting average of .420 in 1920 remains the highest recorded average in American League history to date.

In August 1921, George Sisler's career was almost over when he suffered a sinus infection that caused double vision, forcing him to sit on the bench for an entire season. Sisler returned in 1923, but he was never the same player again, though he still had some great years. In 1939, George Sisler was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. From 1916 to 1927, he was among the most consistent performers in baseball history, with a batting average of .340 or better in nine of those seasons. George Sisler passed away on March 26, 1973, in Richmond Heights, Missouri, leaving behind an impressive legacy as one of the greatest players in the history of baseball.
