Strickland started his professional baseball career in the minor leagues, playing for the Indianapolis Indians, a Triple-A team, in 1948. He quickly caught the attention of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed him in 1949 and called him up to the big leagues in 1950. He spent five seasons with the Pirates, where he established himself as a solid shortstop and a valuable asset to the team. In 1955, Strickland was traded to the Cleveland Indians, where he had his best season, and was selected to his only All-Star Game. He continued to play for the Indians until he was traded again to the Boston Red Sox in 1959. He ended his baseball career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1960.

Strickland's legacy as a baseball player goes beyond his impressive defensive skills and offensive statistics. He was a natural leader, respected by his teammates and opponents alike, and served as a mentor to younger players. After retiring from baseball, he became a minor league manager and coach, passing on his knowledge and experience to generations of aspiring ballplayers. Strickland died on June 25, 2010, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 83, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of baseball.
