George Zuverink Autographs
George Zuverink was a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for five teams from 1951 to 1959. He was born on August 20, 1924, in Holland, Michigan. He started his professional baseball career in 1946, playing in the minor leagues for six years before making his debut with the St. Louis Browns in 1951. He spent four seasons with the Browns, posting a 3.92 ERA in 167 innings pitched.
Zuverink's best season came in 1954 when he played for the Baltimore Orioles. He was used primarily as a relief pitcher, appearing in 43 games and posting a 2.69 ERA in 100 innings pitched. He also recorded 11 saves, which was a career-high. Zuverink's impressive performance helped the Orioles finish second in the American League that year. He played for the Orioles until 1956 and then had stints with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, and Philadelphia Phillies before retiring in 1959.
After his playing career, Zuverink worked as a sales representative for a sporting goods company for nearly thirty years. He remained involved in baseball by coaching his son's Little League teams and remaining a loyal fan of the sport. Zuverink passed away on September 8, 2014, at the age of 90. He will always be remembered for his contributions to baseball and his dedication to the game.
