Wilson played as an outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1982 to 1984. During the 1982 season, he hit twenty-two home runs, which helped him earn the National League Rookie of the Year Award. The following year, he had a career-high batting average of .303. After three seasons with the Phillies, he played for five more teams over a ten-year period, including the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Seattle Mariners. In 1993, he retired from baseball after accumulating a career batting average of .265 with 98 home runs and 463 RBI in 1,242 games.
