Gross began his professional baseball career in 1971 when he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the second round of the amateur draft. He spent nine seasons playing for the Astros before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1980, where he batted .404 in his first season with the team. After three seasons with the Cubs, Gross was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he spent the majority of his remaining career.
