Gus Suhr was born on September 3, 1906, in San Francisco, California. He began his baseball career in 1928, when he was signed to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Suhr played first base for the Pirates for nine seasons and became one of their most consistent players. In 1934, Suhr led the National League in runs batted in (RBIs) with 128, earning him the nickname "Diamond Gus." He was also a great fielder, known for his quick reflexes and sure hands. Suhr was named to the National League All-Star team twice and won two World Series championships with the Pirates in 1928 and 1930.

After leaving the Pirates in 1938, Suhr played for several other teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Braves. He retired from baseball in 1940 and became a coach for the Pirates until 1952. Suhr is considered one of the best first baseman in Pirates history and was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2015. He passed away on March 19, 2004, at the age of 97.
