Gus Zernial Autographs
Gus Zernial was a professional baseball player who played for the Athletics, White Sox, Tigers, and Kansas City Athletics during his career from 1949 to 1960. He was born on June 27th, 1923, in Beaumont, Texas. Zernial started his professional baseball career playing for the Fort Worth Cats in the Texas League. In 1947, he was discovered by the Chicago Cubs and signed on for their minor league team. However, he could not be drafted by the Cubs as they already had a well-established outfield lineup. It wasn't until 1949 that Zernial got his MLB break with the Philadelphia Athletics.
Zernial made his mark in MLB during the 1950s with a strong batting record. In 1951, he hit 33 home runs and 129 RBIs, and in 1953, he hit 42 home runs and 108 RBIs while playing for the White Sox. He had one of his career highlights in 1956 while playing for the Athletics against the Cleveland Indians. During a rare triple-header played in just one day, Zernial hit three home runs that helped the Athletics win two of the games. Throughout his baseball career, Zernial had a batting average of .265 with 237 home runs and 776 RBIs in 1272 games.
After retiring from baseball, Zernial worked as a sports analyst and commentator for the Oakland Athletics, and later worked as a marketing director for the Arizona State Parks Department. Zernial passed away on January 20th, 2011, at the age of 87, in Fresno, California. He will always be remembered as one of the great power hitters of his generation and for his performance in the 1956 triple-header.
