In the 1959 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Smith became an instant hero when he hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2. The Athletics trailed by three runs before Smith's game-changing home run, which tied the game 5-5. Although the Athletics eventually lost that game 11-10, Smith's homer remains one of the most iconic moments in World Series history. He finished that World Series with 5 hits and 5 RBIs, hitting .417 and an on-base percentage of .462.

Smith retired from professional baseball in 1962 at the age of 31. He ended his career with a .983 fielding percentage in 528 games played. After his playing career, Smith became a scout, spending 14 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds. He was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 1990, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the city as an alumni of the Kansas City Athletics. Hal Smith passed away in 2014 at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most impactful catchers in Athletics' history.
