Hank Severeid Autograph
Hank Severeid was an American professional baseball catcher who played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for around 14 years. Born on June 1, 1891, in Story City, Iowa, Severeid started playing baseball when he was just a teenager. He soon gained popularity and went on to play in the minor leagues in 1911. In 1914, he made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds, where he played for three seasons before being traded to the New York Yankees. Severeid is still remembered as an incredible defensive catcher who had a unique ability to throw out runners attempting to steal bases. He is known to have caught every day for seven seasons in a row without missing a game. Known for his consistency and reliability as a catcher, Severeid played a vital role in the Yankees' winning two consecutive championships in 1927 and 1928. His impressive performances helped him earn recognition as one of the best catchers of his time.
After retiring from baseball in 1929, Severeid returned to Iowa, where he owned and operated a farm. He continued to stay close to baseball by coaching in small leagues and working as a scout for various teams. Severeid was elected to the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 1962 and was also inducted into the Iowa State Baseball Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, he passed away on December 17, 1968, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at the age of 77.
