Harry Walker Autographs
Harry Walker was an American professional baseball player and manager born on October 22, 1918, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He had a successful career in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1938 to 1955. He started his major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1940 and helped the team win the 1942 National League pennant. He earned the nickname "Harry the Hat" for his habit of adjusting his hat each time he came up to bat.
Despite being drafted in the army in 1944, he continued his baseball career, playing for the Houston Buffaloes and New Orleans Pelicans, earning the Southern Association batting title in 1946. He was again called to serve in the army in 1951, and upon his return, he joined the Philadelphia Phillies. His best year came in 1950, where he had a career-high .363 batting average, and was the National League batting champion. In a playing career that spanned 17 seasons, Harry Walker hit .296 with 82 home runs, 915 runs batted in, and 1,688 hits.
After retiring from his playing career, Harry Walker became a manager for the St. Louis Cardinals and also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Oakland Athletics. He won two National League pennants with the Cardinals, including a World Series championship in 1946. He was known for his calm and steady demeanor in the dugout and his excellent ability to manage pitchers. He remained active in baseball until his death on August 8, 1999, in Birmingham, Alabama. Harry Walker was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.
