Wehmeier's professional baseball career began in 1945 when he started playing for the Cincinnati Reds. He was nineteen at the time, and he quickly proved himself to be a skilled pitcher. Wehmeier played for the Reds for seven seasons, and during that time, he recorded nineteen complete games and five shutouts. In 1952, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he continued to have impressive performances. In 1953, Wehmeier was named the National League's Pitcher of the Month for June after throwing two back-to-back shutouts.

After fourteen years in the major leagues, Wehmeier retired from baseball in 1958. Over the course of his career, he amassed 92 wins, 89 losses, and had an earned run average of 4.23. He was known for his intensity and dedication to the game, which earned him respect from his teammates and opponents alike.
