He played high school baseball at Toho High School in Chiba and was selected to play in the prestigious Koshien tournament, a high school baseball event held yearly in Japan. In 2021, Sawamura signed with the Boston Red Sox, becoming the first Japanese pitcher signed by the team. Though he suffered a slow start to his career in Major League Baseball, he quickly settled into the Red Sox bullpen and became an effective pitcher for the team. Sawamura has since helped the team in key games, including their 2021 playoff run, where he helped the Red Sox win the American League Wild Card game against the New York Yankees.
