Ivan DeJesus was a professional baseball player born on January 9th, 1953 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He made his professional debut as a shortstop with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974, where he spent six seasons before being traded to the Chicago Cubs. DeJesus played for the Cubs from 1980 to 1984, and then spent a season with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1985. He spent his final two seasons with the Detroit Tigers and retired from Major League Baseball in 1988.
DeJesus is renowned for his defensive skills as a shortstop, with a career fielding percentage of .969. In addition to his defensive prowess, he was also a reliable hitter, with a career batting average of .254 and a total of 1,660 hits. DeJesus also stole 234 bases and scored 775 runs over his fourteen-year career. He was an integral member of the Los Angeles Dodgers team that won the World Series in 1981, contributing significantly both offensively and defensively.
Since retiring from baseball, DeJesus has remained involved in the sport as a coach and manager. He has coached at various levels of the minors, from Class A to Triple-A, and managed the Triple-A Louisville Bats from 2005 to 2006. DeJesus has also worked as a special assistant to the general manager for the Cincinnati Reds, where he assisted with minor league development and scouting. In addition to his work in baseball, DeJesus has also been involved in several community outreach initiatives, including the development of youth baseball programs in his native Puerto Rico.
