Jack Cust was born on January 16, 1979, in Flemington, New Jersey. He started playing baseball at a young age and was a standout player in high school. Cust was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft. During his minor league career, he showed great power at the plate and had a high on-base percentage. He made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2001 but struggled in his limited playing time. After a few years in the minors, Cust signed with the Oakland Athletics in 2007. He had a career year in 2008, hitting 33 home runs and driving in 77 runs while batting .231. His 111 walks led the American League, and he was also hit by a pitch a record-setting 21 times that year. Cust played for several other teams over the years, including the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros. He finished his MLB career with a .242 batting average, 105 home runs, and 323 RBIs.

Despite his solid numbers, Cust was often criticized for his high strikeout rate and defensive struggles. However, he was known for his excellent patience at the plate and his ability to draw walks. After his retirement, Cust became a minor league hitting coach, working with several teams in the Oakland Athletics organization. He also worked as a hitting consultant for the Toronto Blue Jays.
