Jack Hamilton was a professional baseball player who played as a pitcher in the Major Leagues from 1962 to 1969. Born on December 25, 1938, in Burlington, North Carolina, Hamilton started his baseball career in the minor leagues, playing for various teams before finally making his Major League debut in 1962 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Hamilton is best known for a pitch that tragically changed the course of his career. On August 18, 1967, while playing for the New York Mets, Hamilton threw a pitch that hit Tony Conigliaro of the Boston Red Sox in the face, fracturing his cheekbone and causing severe damage to his left eye. The incident ended Conigliaro's season and had a profound impact on Hamilton's career as well. He was never quite the same pitcher after that and retired from baseball in 1969.

Despite the tragic incident, Jack Hamilton's baseball career was notable. He had a career record of 32-40 with an ERA of 4.53, pitching in 246 games, 85 of which were starts. He was known for his fastball, which was clocked at over 100 mph, and his ability to strike out batters. Hamilton will always be remembered for his part in one of the most tragic incidents in baseball history, but his career deserves recognition beyond that one moment.
